As I have understood there is no concept of Devil(शैतान) and God (ईश्वर)separately in our scriptures. Every thing animate or inanimate , person, animal, idea, place, act & event is God. In Vishnu Sahasranama there is a shloka- विस्तार: स्थावरस्थाणु: प्रँमाणं बीजमव्ययम् अर्थोऽनर्थो महाकोशो महाभोगो महाधन:।। He is like seed which has complete extent of a tree inside it;same way he is the whole extent of universe from a smallest ‘anu’ अणु’. He is extreme of every cell,activity/enjoyment & property. He is both अर्थ and अनर्थ। Nothing is beyond him. If Devil is separate, world of Devil and that of God will be separate. But nothing is beyond God. Thus no concept of Devil (शैतान) as per Hindu Scriptures. Man when does not recognise Self/Atman within, he is termed as Ignorant (अज्ञानी). Ignorant doesn’t see God within or outside. He just enjoys &thinks that momentary pleasures by actions/sensations through five senses organs/ ५ ज्ञानेन्द्रिय(which culminates in sorrow दु:ख) as the ultimate of Life. He thus swings between sorrow, pain and momentary pleasure. But if he considers that these momentary pleasures are not ultimate of life but realises that one must control (नियंत्रण) these urge for more higher pleasures (इच्छा ), he is in tune (सुर) with the life force and is called ‘Sur’ सुर and others are not in tune with life force are Asur (असुर). There has been no difference between सुर and असुर except this. Thus those who are frantically after their uncontrolled इच्छा are असुर rest are सुर. Generally both are present in a person, whether they agree or not that there is a unified power of God. असुर are intolerant as their wishes and egos are ‘supreme ‘& they themselves are very very small before their wishes and ego. All our Mythological or religious stories are full of struggles of such सुर quality and असुर quality in a person or in a society like Ramayan or Mahabharata. Any one with असुर quality can change to ‘Sur’ quality if he removes the ignorance which is present in him in the form of ego or frantic pursuit of his momentary pleasures. If he removes or moves to remove this ignorance he is on spiritual path & is called Gyani/ ऋषि. The first step is the discipline of self behaviour towards others & then to purifying behaviour towards self. ऋषि Patanjali calls it as Yam & Niyam. If he wants to realise Self, & he goes beyond sorrow (the effect of Ignorance) of the world ,he becomes BrahmaRishi (ब्रह्मर्षि), the abode of eternal Bliss (आनन्द).He realises the Truth (that which doesn’t change with time/अकाल य महाकाल/नित्य/not bound by time/सत्य), realises the pure Consciousness ( the all pervading/चिति) .In other words He realises the Truth, the bliss & the Pure Consciousness i . e. सत्य, चिति और आनन्द. This combines as सच्चिदानन्द। Those who are in search of सच्चिदानन्द are on path of Spirituality/ आध्यात्मिक पथ. Several ways have been described in Gita, our sacred book which covers every aspect of struggles of ‘Sur’ & ‘Asur’ qualities within a person or a society. - vinai
